Parallel execution of DES programs seems a natural way to improve performance, as some notion of concurrent processes inheres in most DES systems. Consequently, researchers have devoted a substantial amount of research to PDES in the last decade. (The "DES" and "PDES" sidebars offer more details on these subjects.) Practitioners have not, however, used PDES methods to solve real-world problems to the extent that you might expect. This may be because PDES is usually seen simply as a way to improve a simulation program's execution speed. However, practitioners focus not just on execution time but on the entire time required to get results—which includes the whole simulation life cycle. For these users, perhaps the simplest, most cost-effective way of reducing turn-around time is to capitalize on the fact that most simulation studies require several runs with
